Traditionally, a burial service involves a visitation and is followed by a funeral service. While the casket is typically present at both these events, it is your decision whether to have the casket open. You then have a number of options for interment. Decisions also need to be made on whether the body needs to be embalmed, what kind of casket to use, what cemetery to use and what to put on the gravestone.
A monumental cemetery is the traditional style of cemetery where headstones or other monuments made of marble or granite rise vertically above the ground. There are countless different types of designs for headstones, ranging from very simple, to large and complex.
A lawn cemetery is where each grave is marked with a small commemorative plaque that is placed horizontally at the head of the grave at ground-level. Families can still be involved in the design and in choosing the information contained on the plaque, but in most cases the plaques are a standard design.
A mausoleum is an external, free-standing building constructed as a monument enclosing the interment space or burial chamber of a deceased person or people. A mausoleum may be considered a type of tomb, or the tomb may be considered to be within the mausoleum.
Columbarium walls are generally reserved for cremated remains. While cremated remains can be kept at home by families, or scattered somewhere significant to the deceased, a columbarium provides friends and family a place to come to visit. Columbarium walls do not take up a lot of space and a cheaper alternative to a burial plot.
Natural cemeteries, also known as eco-cemeteries or green cemeteries, are a new style of cemetery set aside for natural burials. Natural burials are motivated by the desire to be environmentally conscious. While natural burials can be performed at any type of cemetery, they are usually done in a natural woodland area. Conventional markings, such as headstones, are generally replaced with a tree, bush, or the placement of a natural stone.
Cremation is an increasingly popular option for families here in Sonoma County, serving as an alternative to burial. Reasons for cremation vary: some religions request it, while other people consider it more environmentally conscious. Some may simply like the idea of cremation over traditional burials. Cremation is not an alternative to a funeral, but rather an alternative to burials or other forms of disposition. Cremated remains can be scattered, buried, or they may be kept with the family in a decorative urn. There are so many unique options for your family when it comes to cremation today: cremated remains can be placed in an artificial coral reef in the ocean; they can be launched into space or sent up in helium balloons; they can even be spun into glass pieces of art or diamonds. Whatever you desire, we’re here to discuss the options available to you.
We are proud to be the only funeral home in Sonoma County that has green burial packages. These packages are bundled and then discounted. The discount will be applied when green burial products are purchased through Eggen & Lance. If you wish to select products or services outside of these packages, the package will then be itemized, and the discount will not apply.
What is green burial?
A green funeral is choosing to have a funeral with very minimal impact to our environment. Green Burial means that there will be no harmful chemicals used, and all Burial containers/ shrouds will be 100% biodegradable. This will allow them break down naturally in the earth. We offer many options for families to choose, from a home funeral to a service in our facility and graveside at a green burial cemetery. Our services can be private of if you wish, or public. We strongly encourage family involvement from start to finish to make this the most personal ceremony.
Is embalming necessary?
No, California state law says that anyone who passes away must be placed in refrigeration or embalmed within 24 hours of passing. Embalming is not required by law but there are some situations that may require it. Our facility can accommodate both. With a family that chooses to have a “Green Visitation” we offer two forms of presentation, non-invasive techniques and minimal invasive technique. The use of dry ice is best to keep the body in its natural state. It helps slows down the biological breakdown. We also offer Ecobalming which is a temporary preservation of their loved one with natural oils done through internal practices with minimal invasion. The family can choose which ever they feel most comfortable with.
Can I Have a Green Cremation?
Yes, you can. You can still have a green funeral whether at home or in our facility. Instead of taking your loved one to a cemetery we will transport them to our crematory. We also offer a selection of green, biodegradable urns.

As one of the top-rated funeral homes and mortuaries in Sonoma County, our goal is to provide compassionate and professional funeral services to every client and family that walks through our door.
Given that over 31% of Sonoma County is Hispanic/Latino, it is not uncommon that we have requests for deceased transportation or international “Ship Out” to countries like Mexico.
In the funeral industry, a “ship out” refers to the process of transporting a deceased individual’s remains to a different location for a funeral or burial service. This service is necessary when a person passes away in one location but wishes to be laid to rest in another, whether it’s in a different city, state, or even country.
The “ship out” procedure involves careful coordination and logistics to ensure that the deceased’s remains are transported safely and respectfully. Our funeral home in Santa Rosa handles this responsibility, liaising with transportation services, airlines, and appropriate authorities to arrange for the transportation and necessary documentation for the transfer.
In instances where a deceased family member needs to be transported to Mexico, we offer thorough and reliable shipping services.
The process of shipping a deceased loved one to Mexico involves several steps that we carefully handle on your behalf.
