Obituary of Mary Buck
Mary Gailor Feliz Buck, age 77, died on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at her home in Santa Rosa, surrounded by her family. From growing up in Vallejo, California, the daughter of Leo and Margaret Feliz, to her death, she nourished people around her with love, genuine caring, and a passion for life. Born on March 20, 1940, Mary was the younger sister of John Feliz, and life-long friends with Jane Jensen (Lindsey), who remained her dear friend for life. She graduated with honors from the University of the Pacific with both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Education with what would become a life-long career and passion as an elementary school teacher. In1964 she married Leland Buck and they settled in Stockton, California. In 1966 she had their first child, Michael Leland Feliz Buck, and gave him her historic family name of Feliz. In 1972, after the death of her beloved father, Leo Feliz, she moved to Santa Rosa with her young family to be closer to her mother, on the Mendocino Coast. In 1976 her dear daughter Katrina Jane Feliz Bivin was born. Over a 25 year teaching career in Santa Rosa, Mary taught in the Rincon Valley Unified School District. Her work ethic and ability to inspire young children made her a popular teacher, and she was awarded Teacher of the Year for the District. While working full time as a teacher and raising a family she also dedicated herself to building a very successful small business, St. Francis Pharmacy, with her husband and managing two Hallmark stores. Mary’s many years of teaching also yielded a small group of close friends with whom she shared in many trips, cruises, celebrations, and walks during her retirement. Mary is survived by her son Michael (Anna), her daughter Katrina (Robert), her grandchildren, Sam, Hannah, Zoë, Lizzy, and Rosie. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, and her Husband Leland Claude Buck. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, July 15th at 11:00 am at the Santa Rosa Memorial Park Chapel, 1900 Franklin Blvd., Santa Rosa. The family will greet friends at a reception following the service. The Buck Family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at Memorial Hospital for their attentiveness and loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mary’s name to Susan G. Komen in the fight against breast cancer.
