Obituary of Melissa Elizabeth Kindell
Melissa Elizabeth Kindell, also known as Betty, passed away in her sleep from complications of Alzheimer’s disease on New Years’ Eve, 2015 at her home in Santa Rosa, CA. She is survived by her daughters, Darcy Silva of Santa Rosa, Leafa Fiore of Cloverdale; her grandchildren, Melissa Johnson and Obadiah Lomalyndale of Santa Rosa; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by David Eugene Kindell, her husband of 41 years. Betty was born in Lacon, Illinois and was the 9th of 11 children. When the family lost the farm during the Great Depression, they moved to Pueblo, Colorado where Betty met her future husband, Gene. During War World II, the family moved to Richmond, California. Betty was a graduate of Richmond High School, class of 1949. Betty and Gene married in 1950. During Gene’s naval career, they lived in Guam; Millington, Tennessee; Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and Quonset Bay, Rhode Island. The family moved to Santa Rosa in 1960. Betty worked at Sonoma County Hospital’s dietary department until she became disabled from a back condition. Betty was active in the Sonoma County Employee’s Retirement Group, the Women’s Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 114. Betty loved to travel. She and Gene took a long road trip across the United States in a recreational vehicle with two of her sisters. After Gene’s death, she traveled to the British Isles, Alaska, Australia and the Caribbean. Betty will be best remembered for her witty sense of humor and love of garage sales. A chapel service will be held at 11:00 a.m. this Thursday, Jan. 7th at Eggen and Lance Chapel, 1540 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made in Betty’s name to the Sonoma County Humane Society.
