Obituary of EDIT McMILLAN

Edit (“Edie”) Clea Kohalmi McMillan passed away on November 20th at her home in Cotati, California, just three months after being diagnosed with lung cancer. She lived her final days just as she did her entire life: with passion, determination, love and deep concern for her family and friends and for the natural world around her. Edie’s family was everything to her and she loved them with all her being: her husband of 33 years, Charles “Chuck” Raymond McMillan, their twin boys Thomas Jacob McMillan and Cyan Sawyer McMillan, her brother Tamas “Tomi” Kohalmi (Marie), her sister Gerda Kohalmi-Gyura, and a multitude of friends, extended family members, grateful patients and her many beloved pets. Born in Salgótarján, Hungary on June 7, 1964, to Elizabeth Body (nee Gyongyi Erzsebet Maroti) and Laszlo Kohalmi, both now deceased, Edie learned early the importance of forging her own path. Without her parents’ knowledge, Edie left Hungary at the age of 18 and attempted immigration to Norway without success, then West Germany under guest worker status, before a sponsor ultimately brought her to the United States. Here she worked diligently and tirelessly to create the life she had been denied in Communist Hungary. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree at San Jose State University and her Master of Science Degree in Nursing at Sonoma State University, and worked as a Nurse Practitioner for many years at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Rosa. Ever passionate about the wellbeing of her patients and clients, she was also certified as an Alchemical Hypnotherapist and a Medical Qigong Practitioner. Edie was a determined girl and woman. A survivor of a severe life-threatening childhood illness and later breast cancer, she dedicated her life not only to continually learning and growing, but ever seeking ways to contribute to a better life and future for her entire family, her patients and her students/precepts. She had a way of always finding, cultivating and sharing joy and wisdom with those fortunate enough to know her. Never one to settle or to accept defeat, she took what little she had and created a beautiful and meaningful life for herself and for those she loved. She will be deeply missed and will remain an everlasting source of inspiration and love in our lives. A celebration of Edie’s inspirational and loving life will be held at 12:00 p.m., on January 8th at the Odd Fellows Recreation Center in Guerneville, California. Many have inquired where to send donations or flowers. The family is partnering with the Sonoma State University Foundation to establish its very first scholarship fund specifically for Nurse Practitioner students. The Edit Kohalmi McMillan Scholarship Fund will honor Edie and all NPs demonstrating the same passion for helping others, keeping patients healthy, and helping them protect and preserve health and wellness. Donations will be tax-deductible.
