Obituary of Katherine Anne Lewis
Kat Lewis very sadly passed away at her home on December 20, 2018, surrounded by her loving family, after a nearly two year battle with colon cancer. She was 45. Kat was born in Santa Rosa in 1973, attended Hidden Valley Elementary School, Santa Rosa Junior High (middle) School and graduated with honors from Santa Rosa High School (Class of 1991). She attended and graduated Cum Laude from California Polytechnical State University in San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly SLO) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business in 1996. While at Cal Poly, she was in the London Study program in the spring of 1994. After graduation, Kat went to Europe for six weeks with college friends. Upon her return, she first worked for Lockheed Martin in Sunnyvale and then for Nortel Networks in Santa Clara. In 1998, Kat went to Australia to visit her sister Cheri, who was there on a college student exchange program for a semester. Upon returning, Kat decided to leave Nortel to travel and work in Australia for a year. Kat flew to Sydney, Australia with her best friend Laura in early 1999, worked at two temporary jobs and traveled extensively for almost a year. Kat returned to Santa Rosa in early 2000 and worked for Accountemps, Robert Half International. Kat began working for the Santa Rosa Junior College in June of 2001. In July of 2012, Kat became the Manager of Business Services for the Petaluma Campus of the SRJC. Kat really enjoyed working for the SRJC and this joy was apparent to everyone there.
On her way home from Australia in early 2000, Kat made a week long stop in Fiji, where she met a tall Englishman named Matt. He was on his way home to England after also visiting and working in Australia. After a visit to Santa Rosa, an extended trip to Southern California together and numerous overseas calls, Matt proposed to Kat by telephone. They were married in Santa Rosa in June of 2001. They have two children, a girl they named Madeline (Maddie) and a boy named Noah.
Kat always made time for family functions and watching her kids play soccer, but her passions included crocheting, Zumba and reading. She could be found crocheting during all of her “idle moments.” Kat sold most of her scarves, hats and jewelry at local craft fairs, a few house parties and also online. Kat enjoyed creating something beautiful that people would enjoy. Zumba was Kat’s favorite form of exercise and she became very good. She really looked forward to going to classes in Rohnert Park years after moving to Santa Rosa, especially after she started working at the SRJC Petaluma Campus. Kat was an avid reader since preschool. It was common for her to get ten books at a time from the library and finish them well before their due dates and belonged to a book club for many years.
Kat is survived by her husband Matt, two children Maddie (14) and Noah (11), parents Diane and Tom Yokoi of Santa Rosa, brother Jim Yokoi (spouse Rebecca) of Newport Beach, sister Cheri Costello (spouse Chris) of Santa Rosa, and two nephews and two nieces. Kat is also survived by mother-in-law Jeanie Lewis from England, sister-in-law Samantha Phan-Kim (spouse Christophe) and a nephew and niece from France, and numerous aunts and uncles, and many cousins in California.
A Celebration of Life for Kat Lewis will be held on Saturday, January 12, at 2:00 pm at Shone Farm, a SRJC facility located at 7450 Steve Olson Lane, Forestville, CA, which is near the end of Trenton-Healdsburg Road north of River Road. Please limit attendance to adults and children over 10.
