Obituary of Verne and Winona "Nonie" Avila
Verne (81) passed from complications of congestive heart failure. His wife of 63 years, Nonie (82), passed 18 days later after suffering a stroke. They are survived by their loving children: Andrea Kiger and Aaron Avila (Rebecca); adored grandchildren: Ryan Avila, Heather Gallegos, Crissy Gallegos Rossi (Chris) and Nicole Kiger; very special great-grandchildren: Joseph Trichel, Kiera and Colin Rossi; niece Ronda Brisgel (Joel), nephew Troy Hanson (Marnie), and Jason White; along with numerous cousins and their beloved dog of 15 years Wizzer. Verne is also survived by his devoted sister Julie Hanson. He is predeceased by his parents Manuel & LaVerne and his brother Steven. Nonie is predeceased by her parents Woody & Verla. She is survived by her siblings Ron, Keith, John, Wendy, and Doreen and Monya. Verne was a retired Santa Rosa Firefighter who later worked as a courier for the Blood Bank of the Redwoods. Nonie worked as a hairdresser for many years then later as a Floral Merchandiser for Safeway from where she retired. In her spare time, Nonie enjoyed playing cards, sewing, and attending her great grandchildren's sporting events. Verne looked forward to his monthly breakfasts with fellow retired firefighters and singing his heart out, which he did quite well! Together they loved to go on cruises and really enjoyed camping, to which they belonged to numerous RV clubs and had made many great friends. In his High School years Verne was dubbed the Johnny Ray of Santa Rosa High due to his unique singing ability. Verne and Nonie met and fell in love at Santa Rosa High School, Verne class of 1955 and Nonie 1954. Verne was proud to be a fourth generation native Santa Rosan. They were so special in all of our lives and will be thought of daily and missed deeply. At the request of Verne and Nonie there will be no services. A Memorial Gathering and celebration of two incredible lives will take place in the spring.
