Obituary of Avalon Garrett
It is with great sadness that the family of Avalon Chelene Garrett announces the news of her passing, on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, at the age of 64 years. She died peacefully in the family home in Santa Rosa, CA after a long illness.
Avalon was a native Californian, born in Monterey California to Willie L. and Ida M Garrett. She was a graduate of Montgomery High in Santa Rosa where as a senior, was voted in as head song leader. She then went on to attend and graduate from the University of California Santa Barbara where she received a master’s degree in Dance and Theater Arts. She worked for the Ventura California Youth Authority as a youth counselor for 30 years, while also teaching dance at Moorpark College, in Moorpark, CA.
Among her many talents Avalon was an excellent athlete. Running, cycling, swimming were her hobbies throughout her life… but Avalon’s passion was dance. Starting as a little girl developing a love and talent in ballet and a gifted performer, to song leader at Montgomery High, to training and being accepted on scholarship to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Throughout her life she shared her love of dance as a teacher, performer, and gifted choreographer. After her retirement in teaching she entered the world of ballroom dancing, training and successfully competing in numerous ball room dance competitions.
Avalon was truly one of a kind with varied other interest including calligraphy, shopping, fashion/design finding elegant gowns for dance competitions, antiques, classic movies, and an extreme avid Trekkie.
Avalon will be lovingly remembered by her father, Willie L. Garrett, her three younger siblings, brother Adrian L Garrett, and sisters Angela Glover, and Alicia Dasso. She will also be remembered fondly by her nephew Aaron Glover, and niece Addyson Dasso. Avalon was predeceased by her beloved mother Ida M. Garrett.
Services and internment will be privately held per Avalon wishes.
