Martin (Marty) Edward Pieh was born January 4, 1958 in Ohio. He was the fourth born of eight. His brother, Randy, and his beloved father, George, preceded him in death. Marty is survived by his Mom, Alice, five brothers: Larry, Terry, Tim, Danny and Matthew, and sister, Loretta and many nieces and nephews.
Marty came to California at the age of twenty-two to attend Berkeley University. But on a trip to Bodega Bay he was drawn to the ocean, replacing his dreams of school with commercial fishing. Marty traveled on boats from the Columbia River in Oregon to the Channel Islands in Southern California, gleaning inspiration on his midnight watches.
Marty met his partner, Alix Geller and they began their dance of twenty-eight years together. Their daughter, Hannah Pieh, joined the family ( which included Alix's daughters: Caldonia and Naomi) in 1998. The joy of her father's life, Marty considered her his greatest accomplishment.
Marty also loved sports, Texas Hold'em and philosophical discussions. He liked to make people think as much as he liked to make us laugh. The last nineteen years he worked for Safeway, spreading his humor among staff and shoppers
Marty was truly an eclectic man, appreciating a variety of music from cornball country to hard rock. He enjoyed crooning along to Dean Martin and Sinatra. Marty's wit and wisdom will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Marty passed away at his home in Forestville on May 21, 2019. A celebration of his life will take place at Pleasant Hills Memorial Park on 1700 Pleasant Hill Road in Sebastopol on June 6 at 1:00. Friends are invited to toss a momentum or flower into his resting site, or share a funny or inspiring story about their time with him.
