Green Burials in Sonoma County – What You Need to Know
May 15th, 2025
As end-of-life traditions evolve, more families are seeking options that reflect their values—especially when it comes to sustainability. At Santa Rosa Mortuary, Eggen & Lance, and Fred Young Funeral Homes, we’re proud to be Sonoma County’s only Green Burial Council-certified providers. If you’re exploring an environmentally responsible way to honor a loved one, here’s what sets our green burials apart—and why they matter.
What is a Green Burial?
A green burial returns the body to the earth as naturally as possible, without introducing harmful toxins or non-biodegradable materials into the environment. Our 100% natural approach eliminates environmental impact by:
- No embalming chemicals – We never use formaldehyde or synthetic preservatives.
- Biodegradable caskets and shrouds – No metal, concrete, or varnished hardwoods—only earth-friendly options like organic cotton, pine, or willow.
- Replacing traditional grave markers – We use native plants or unpolished fieldstone for a more natural landscape.
- Protecting ecosystems – Our burials take place in conservation-focused sites that help preserve Sonoma County’s natural beauty.
The Green Burial Council certifies products that are nontoxic, biodegradable, and sustainably harvested—standards we strictly follow.

What You Need to Know Before Choosing a Green Burial
Is Embalming Ever Required?
In most cases, no. California law only requires refrigeration or preservation within 24 hours of passing. Embalming is not mandatory unless:
- The body is being transported across certain state lines, where regulations differ
- A public viewing is planned that exceeds 2 hours without ecobalming
Instead of embalming, we offer two natural options:
- Dry Ice Cooling – A natural, non-invasive method that slows decomposition and supports short-term viewings.
- Ecobalming – A minimally invasive preservation technique using plant-based fluids that extends viewing time while remaining eco-friendly (available as an $845 add-on).
These options maintain dignity and peace of mind while supporting sustainable choices.
Can We Still Have a Viewing?
Yes—green burials can include viewings and time for reflection. We offer:
- Green Visitations – Your loved one is presented using dry ice or ecobalming, in alignment with natural burial practices.
- Private Family Goodbyes – An intimate farewell held at home, in our chapel, or at the cemetery.
Viewings can last up to two hours with dry ice or longer with ecobalming.
Can We Have a Traditional Funeral Service?
Absolutely. Choosing a green burial doesn’t mean giving up meaningful traditions. In fact, many families find green funerals to be even more personal and intentional.
You can still incorporate:
- Home vigils or gatherings
- Chapel ceremonies at our Santa Rosa or Fred Young locations
- Graveside services at natural cemeteries
We’ll help you design a service that honors your family’s beliefs and values—while caring for the earth.
Is Cremation a Green Option?
While cremation is often viewed as an alternative to burial, it is not considered fully green due to the energy involved. However, we offer green funeral services with cremation, along with eco-friendly urns and options for those who choose cremation.
Available cremation add-ons include:
- Biodegradable Urns – Made from paper, sand, salt, or cornstarch
- Witnessed Cremations – Providing transparency and peace of mind
- Scattering Services – In natural areas like woodlands, gardens, or coastal spaces
Are Green Burials More Affordable?
Often, yes. Green burials avoid the added costs of embalming and burial vaults. Our packages start at $3,305 and include:
- Certified biodegradable containers
- Green preparation and transportation
- Burial arrangements at approved sites
We also offer flexible payment options to help families manage costs—whether planning ahead or responding to an unexpected need.
Where Are Green Burials Allowed?
Green burials can take place at:
- Certified Natural Cemeteries – Sites focused on conservation and ecological preservation
- Hybrid Cemeteries – Traditional cemeteries with dedicated green burial sections
We’ll help you choose a peaceful meadow, forested site, or other setting that fits your family’s vision.
