Lu Smothers, of Santa Rosa, CA, died peacefully of natural causes on Wednesday, November 23rd, 2016, at Green Acres Care Home in Kenwood, CA. She was 87. She was born on July 14th, 1929, in Artesia, California, to Antonio and Margaret Canhoto. She attended elementary school in Rutherford and Benicia, CA. In junior high and high school she lived in St. Helena, and was vice president of her senior class. “Lu” or “Lucy”, as her friends called her, loved school. Her mischievous side once got the best of her when she put a frog in a girl’s locker, just to see the reaction! After high school, Lu attended Beauty College in Santa Rosa. Although she studied and graduated to be a beautician, Lu found that she didn’t like the work. So, she got a job with Pacific Bell in Ukiah, CA, as an operator, and loved every minute. In 1949 she married Don Smothers, and together they had three children; Cindy, Mark and Linda. Lucille was a dedicated stay-at-home mom who worked diligently to keep care of her husband and kids. She sewed and cooked and cleaned tirelessly. Her famous words when asked, “what’s for dinner?” were, “worms and dirt!,” even though she always had a thoughtful meal prepared. Once she was older and no longer had to cook for Don or the kids, she was so happy to stay far away from the kitchen. Lu was spunky, and was known for giving nicknames, love of family and friends, traveling, sewing, reading and country music- especially George Strait. She will be greatly missed. Lucille is survived by Mark (Barbara) Smothers, Linda (Jerry) Reid and was predeceased by her husband, Donald Smothers; daughter, Cindy White (Smothers) and great-granddaughter, Reese Kostjuk. Lu had seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Thank you to all of those who visited Lu at Green Acres. She loved people and you made her days special. Thank you to Sutter Home Hospice, Fox and Associates Home Care and the entire staff at Green Acres. A visitation will be on Friday, December 2nd, from 3-7 p.m., at Eggen & Lance Mortuary, 1540 Mendocino Ave. in Santa Rosa. A private memorial service will be held. Memorial donations may be made in Lucille’s name to: Sutter Home Hospice, 110 Stony Point Road #200C, Santa Rosa, CA 95401 and the Hanna Boy’s Center, 17000 Arnold Dr. Sonoma, CA 95476.
