Ida Mae Garrett passed away peacefully on Friday Sept. 2, 2016 at her home in Santa Rosa; CA. Ida was 86 yrs of age, born Sept. 29, 1930 in Carthage, Texas to the late Clara and Johnnie Hudson. She is the second oldest of five children, four preceded her in death.
Ida was a role model to her children and her community. She was class valedictorian and graduated from Carthage High School in 1946 before going on to attend Prairie View A&M College where she received her BA in Home Economics in 1950. In 1971 Ida earned a Master’s Degree in Education from California Lutheran College. Ida was a tireless activist for civil rights in her community receiving the Trailblazer Award in 1996 from the NAACP in recognition of courageous and devoted efforts for promoting women’s rights and civil rights. She balanced a family and a full time distinguished career spanning over 50 years as an educator and high level administrator with the California Department of Corrections focusing on providing education, training, and treatment services for our State’s most serious youth offenders. Ida was a devoted wife and mother of four, never missing a baseball game, swim meet, ballet performance, or piano recital. In addition to teaching and helping troubled kids in her career, she always found time to help needy families within her community providing children lunches to those less fortunate. Ida also worked with City Park and Recreation Department advocating for parks and afterschool programs for children that the city of Santa Rosa still enjoys today. Ida had artistic creative side as accomplished seamstress with an elegant style and a flair for fashion, her love of music as a gifted pianist, an excellent cook who loved to entertain friends and family in her home, a love of dancing, and an avid collector of antique blue glass.
Ida is survived by her husband Willie L. Garrett of 65 yrs; sister Caroline Alexander; four children, Avalon, Adrian, Angela & Alicia; two grandchildren, Aaron & Addyson; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Ida will be remembered by friends, family, and others whose lives she has touched at a special gathering to pay tribute to her memory 11:30 AM-3:30PM, Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Fountaingrove Inn, 101 Fountaingrove Parkway, Santa Rosa, CA 95403.
