Honora Veronica “Nonie” Cramer (McCarthy)
July 1, 1919 – July 18, 2016
Honora Veronica “Nonie” Cramer (McCarthy) was born in Niagara Falls, NY on July 1, 1919, one of nine children of Timothy and Catherine (Sullivan) McCarthy. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at age 97 on July 18, 2016 at the Garden View home in Santa Rosa, CA, where she received excellent, loving care in the final years of her life. Nonie attended St. Mary’s High School in Niagara Falls, NY, graduating in the class of 1936. Her yearbook description read: “Dancing eyes and nimble feet, five foot three of fun, laughter and rhythm-all spell “Nonie”. Her naiveté, frankness and charm have carried her through the last four years, delighting us all. Ever attuned to the call of comradeship, Nonie’s is a character that has been trained along the highest ideals. These combined with her quips and smiles have carved this young colleen a special niche in the memories of old St. Mary’s. It seem a little sad that graduation brings partings from such as these.” Nonie met her future husband, Robert W. Cramer II after she charmed him as a drum major by leading her marching band down the wrong street. Bob and Nonie were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Niagara Falls, NY on Valentine’s Day, 1942. They followed Bob’s work at North American Rockwell to Columbus, OH, where they bought a house on Myrtle Ave. and started a family. First born son Robert W. III (Butch) was born in 1943 and followed by daughter Margaret (Peggy) and before long, by twins Tim and Jim. Son Kevin and finally, baby girl Mary Jo completed the family in 1952. In 1962, like many other families employed in the aeronautics industry, Bob and Nonie were transferred from Ohio to Orange County, CA. Bob worked on projects for the budding space program and Nonie became unflappable, when in addition to six hungry children, Bob would bring young test pilots, or the Blue Angels, home for dinner on an hour’s notice. Nonie studied tap dancing as a young woman, and her love of tap turned into one of her most enjoyable adult activities. She danced with a performing group in the San Diego area after a final move to Carlsbad, CA. As her life downsized in later years, she never let go of her tap shoes. A devout Catholic, Nonie was sustained throughout life by her faith. She attended St. Rose Catholic Church after moving to Santa Rosa in 2003 to be closer to her children. She and Bob were fortunate enough to have traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and through Europe. Nonie was well known for her sense of humor and her kind, laughing eyes. She always saw the humor in any situation and continuously sought the sunny side of life. If Nonie had a motto, it would have been “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”. Nonie is preceded in death by her three brothers and five sisters; by devoted husband of 55 years, Robert W. Cramer II in 1997; and beloved oldest son, Robert W. “Butch” Cramer III in 2008. She is survived by daughter, Margaret (Peggy) Violet; sons, Tim, Jim and Kevin Cramer; daughter, Mary Jo Anderson; as well as 12 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A celebration of life will be held at Santa Rosa Mortuary, Eggen & Lance Chapel; 1540 Mendocino Avenue, Santa Rosa, CA on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at 5:30 p.m. Later in the week, a funeral mass will be held at Old Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery; 4050 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, CA on Friday, July 22, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospice.
