Albert Carl Peter, passed away at his home on September 19, 2016, at age 76, with his beloved wife of 36 years, Janice Peter (nee Helmick) by his side. Al graduated from Analy High School in Sebastopol and was produce manager for 33 years at Roger Wilco and Carl’s Market in Petaluma, and then pursued his passion for growing produce commercially for another 10 years. He worked hard all of his adult life to make a better life for his family, often taking on extra jobs on top of his full time work. In retirement, he and Jan moved to Anchor Bay where they transformed five vacant acres into their cherished home “Enchantus Botanicus”. There he spent many happy hours with Jan tending his woodland garden and pursuing many hobbies including: wine making, growing fruits and vegetables, building a wood fired outdoor oven where he made artisan breads, pizzas and meals to share with friends and family. He was a talented photographer, receiving training as a military combat photographer through the National Guard Reserves on the east coast. Although never called into active duty, he used his photographic and darkroom skills in creating thousands of beautiful photos of his children, friends, family and landscapes. He is fondly remembered for his life long curiosity to learn new crafts and skills for anything he wanted or needed – from terrariums and fishing gear to a small sailboat and fabricating/repairing equipment needed for commercial vegetable production and maintaining a rural homestead. He was a devoted father who spent summer weekends on family camping and water skiing trips and even in the midst of hard work gave time to his children such as giving wheelbarrow rides through the crop fields. He was generous with his time and knowledge to all and is fondly remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor. He was a sweet man full of compassion and easily brought to tears whether they were for joy or sadness.
He is survived by his wife Jan, daughters: Lynnette Spadorcio, Denise Peter, Gayle Goldsmith, Tina Mercer-Lowater and Johnnie Piazza; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; his surviving siblings: Virgil, Joan Howard (Gary) and Richard; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved and constant four legged companion “Allie Pup Pup”. The family wishes to give a very special and heartfelt thank you to our dear friends Tom Bertolli and Caroline Ducato of Gualala for being there for Al and the family. Also a special thank you to the RCMS Hospice nurses Katy and Ronna, and Kris from Apria.
At Al’s request, no services will be held. The family wishes that in lieu of flowers, a tree or shrub be planted in his memory in your yard or nearby park. Burial will be at Santa Rosa Memorial Park in the Garden of Devotion.
