Some people begrudge the fact that they are aging. We think getting older is good news for many reasons. Here are a few:
Life. We have learned to enjoy it. We know that it’s a journey with natural twists and bends that can be filled with surprises; some of which are pretty amazing. Most of us now know that unrealistic expectations create more disappointment than anything else.
Enough. We know when enough is enough. The wisdom of life experience helps us recognize what is important and how much we need of anything. This allows for gratitude which begets more of itself and eases our thinking that we always to get or have need more. Instead we can focus more deeply upon what really interests us.
Relationships. We know how to get along better with the people in our lives – friends, acquaintances and family. It is easier to appreciate them because we don’t need them to be someone or something special just to suit us.
Imperfections. We no longer have to be perfect. This frees us up to experience greater sorrow and laughter. It allows us to have bad moments and bad days; this stretches our capacity to forgive ourselves and this, of course can lead to greater forgiveness of others.
Our Place. As we grow older we take more time to smell the roses and take delight in life’s little pleasures because we aren’t hurrying off to complete our ‘to do’ lists. Sunsets become more beautiful and so do treasures, such as books, art, and music. We find a way to enjoy them regardless of whatever hardships we have endured.
Yearnings. We are less afraid to explore our yearnings, more willing to risk looking like a fool. There is an increased ability to become teachable. This is especially so when it comes to cultivating hobbies or making a commitment to volunteer for a community service organization.
So the next time you or someone you know complains about getting older, remember this list. We believe there’s something wonderful about being around to enjoy the later years.
